Lawn Cemetery

This section of the cemetery was established in 1960 and stands in stark contrast to the rest of the grounds. In the southeast, near the cemetery boundary, there is a slope where the scattering ground is located.

Planning began in 1959. The city chronicle notes:

The new cemetery is to be designed like a park, in which all dividing elements are to be eliminated. Instead of creating small plots demarcated by concrete borders or hedges, the groups of graves will be surrounded by a large lawn and set only against the natural backdrop of trees and shrubs. The facility will not only be aesthetically pleasing but, above all, economical. The new section can accommodate 2,500 graves, which will be sufficient for the city’s growth to 16,000 residents. The maintenance of large lawns is more than offset by the fact that far fewer paths need to be maintained.

In this section of the cemetery stands a striking headstone: The Peacock. In early Christianity, it was regarded as a sun-like bird because of its tail, and it was also a symbol of immortality and resurrection, as its flesh was considered incorruptible. In the peacock’s tail and in the rainbow, light refracts into all colors, mirroring the halo.</poi>
