Fountain Gallery
One of the cemetery’s highlights is the fountain gallery. It was not built until 57 years after the cemetery opened. Until then, water for watering had to be obtained from a horse trough near what is now the Blasekreuzung intersection.
In April 1892, cigar manufacturer August Blase, acting on behalf of the Lübbecke Beautification Association, proposed to the city administration that a pump with a basin and a fountain be installed in the cemetery. The association offered to contribute financially to the project. The city council gladly accepted and implemented the proposal. The result was an avenue of fountains set in a “park-like” setting.
The water for the fountains comes from the Siek Spring. Since it was no longer needed there after the horse trough was discontinued, it now flows downhill from fountain to fountain. Municipal tap water is supplied as needed. The linden trees were planted at the same time as the tree-lined avenues and fountains to serve as useful forage for bees. The design featuring fountains and tree-lined avenues was later incorporated into all sections of the cemetery.
