The growth of the city’s population repeatedly necessitated expansions, the last of which took place at the end of the 20th century. Each of these expansions remains recognizable today and reflects the tastes of the time. Key design elements include the avenues, fountains, and hedges.

The entire grounds are designated as a historic landmark, meaning the character of each cemetery expansion must be preserved. The city is supported by a specialized institute in maintaining the grounds and adheres to a jointly developed plan.
